Hello, Subscriber First Name, Have you ever found yourself delightfully lost in an experience? You’ve been working on a painting and somehow day has slipped into evening without notice or you feel a pang of hunger and look up from your writing, surprised by how much time has past? You’re so engaged in your surroundings—running on a mountain trail and hearing little but the crunch of fallen leaves beneath your feet, swooshing smooth turns through a powdery glade and feeling enveloped by the still of the forest around you, or even luxuriating beneath a stream of hot water in the shower—that you are surprised by the spark of inspiration, the solution to your “problem”, as it drops your way, seemingly out of nowhere, as if the Universe is answering your prayer. This, my friend, is flow. At some point, we’ve all experienced flow state—that sense of fluidity between mind and body that can arise when we are fully immersed in an activity we enjoy and in which we are skilled. Operating from this space is not only a joy but helps us solve problems, overcome fear, increase productivity, and connect with others. And, while cultivating these moments may demand more of us than we’re willing to give, we can also access this same sense of ease in small daily moments. We can choose to live in a way that allows for magic. John O’Donohue wrote: “I would love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.” This is my prayer—for my personal journey and for yours.
For me, the past handful of days have been filled with magic: watching fiery sunbeams melt into the sea as the beach dissolved into night; dancing for hours to the rhythmic pulse of world music deep in the redwoods; gathering seemingly chance encounters with friends new and old, that, as time and words and sentiments unfolded, revealed themselves as synchronicities—those meaningful confluences that are felt as nothing less than winks from the Universe. All of this from decidedly jumping into the flow of it. How and where have you allowed for magic in your daily life? Do you give yourself the space and presence to first see the sparks of inspiration that are dropped your way? And, then, the freedom of time (and permission) to actually follow them—wherever they might lead? I invite you to consider what your day, your month, your life, might look like were you to create a welcoming home for mystery in your world.
